How to use Atom Home in Year 6 to get ahead for senior school

Fun practice sessions on Atom Home a few times a week will help your child start Year 7 strong! Here's what to do during Year 6 after your child has finished exams.

Keep working through your weekly learning plan

Your child should keep progressing through the islands in their learning plan. They'll see English, maths and science content at a Year 6 and early Year 7 level.

As they progress through the islands, they'll come across mini-tests. Your child's mini-test results will help you spot any topics to recap before Year 7.

The learning plan will also do this for them automatically, making sure that they build a strong understanding of everything they need to thrive at senior school.

Get stuck into science

Your child's learning plan on Atom Home includes a huge bank of interactive questions, videos, and helpsheets, covering the Year 6 and early Year 7 science curriculum. This is a great way to develop confidence and inspire a passion for physics, chemistry or biology!

Stretch and challenge with Year 6 extension topics  

Want to encourage your child's thinking at a secondary school level? Year 6 extension topics are a fantastic way to challenge your child beyond their current knowledge! 

Extension topics will start to appear in your child's weekly learning plan as they progress. You can also set extra practices in these topics.

Build creative writing and comprehension skills 

At senior school, English focuses more on literary analysis and written composition than on the mechanics of writing.

To start building these skills before Year 7, visit the lesson library. Here, your child can watch recordings of past lessons on creative writing and comprehension.

Maximise mock tests

Using mock tests on Atom Home throughout Year 6 will help your child to feel comfortable with taking tests in Year 7.

With an Exam Prep or Exam Prep Plus package, you can practise CAT4 Level C & D mock tests. Senior schools often use CAT4 in Year 7 for streaming purposes, so being fully prepared is a great way to get into a top set!

On any Atom Home package, you can also use:

• Year 6 SATs mock tests to prepare for SATs (which take place in May of Year 6)
• Year 6 curriculum assessments to spot challenging topics to revise before Year 7
