Introducing mock test islands

On Tuesday, 19th November, we made some updates child’s exam prep plan. We’ll start setting mock tests for your child as part of their weekly plan. Please note that this update is being rolled out to customers with an Exam Prep Plus subscription in year five and above.

As we make updates, you can keep track of what’s new here.

Why the changes?

We know that exam prep looks different for every family. It’s our mission to support you and your child along your journey to exam day, regardless of whether you want to take a hands-on or hands-off approach. When you asked us whether we can set mock tests for your child so you don’t have to remember to, we listened.

What are mock test islands?

Your child’s weekly activities now include a new type of island: mock test islands. Mock test islands are designed to ensure that your child has plenty of opportunities to practice their exam technique and become familiar with the timings and question types that appear on their real exams.

We’ll set your child approximately two mock tests each month to begin with and set more tests for them to complete as their exam day approaches. Your child’s mock test islands will count towards their weekly island target.

Mock test islands

We’ll prioritise setting mock tests for your child’s first-choice school and balance this with setting mock tests for their additional target schools. Learn how to update your child’s target schools. As always, you can continue to set mock tests for your child’s target schools from your Test page.

We wanted to give your child the freedom and flexibility to complete their mock test islands at the most convenient time for them. Your child can choose to start and complete their mock test islands at any point in the week they’re set. They don’t have to complete their learning islands first.

After your child completes their mock test, their results will appear. We recommend spending 10-15 minutes going through their results together. They’ll also be prompted to continue learning or to return to their Learn page.

What happens if my child doesn’t complete their mock test islands?

If the mock test is incomplete at the end of the week, it will move to your child’s to-do list at the start of the new week. When this happens, we’ll automatically update the due date of the test to Sunday.

How will my child and I know which mock tests are set by Atom?

The mock tests we set for your child will appear in their weekly plan on the Learn page. At the end of the week, if the mock test is incomplete, it will be moved to your child’s to-do list at the start of the new week. It will be labelled as being set by Atom.

On your Track page, you’ll be able to see the mock tests we’ve set your child as part of their weekly plan and the tests you’ve set for them. Any mock tests we’ve set for your child will be labelled as being set by Atom.

Will I still be able to set mock tests for my child?

Yes, you can still set mock tests for your child to complete from your Test page. Any tests you set for your child won’t count towards their weekly island target.

Can my child complete mock tests if they aren’t included in their weekly plan?

If you have an Exam Prep Plus subscription and your child is in Year 4 or below, or you have an Exam Prep or English, Maths and Science subscription, mock tests won't appear in your child's weekly plan. To set mock tests for your child, go to your Test page. Learn how to set a mock test.
