Top tips for exam day

Tips to help your child on exam day.

Exam Technique

  1. Before you answer any questions, skim your exam paper and underline any important instructions.
  2. Look for time allocations for each section. If it says spend 15 minutes then spend 15 and don’t go over this time. If you still have questions to answer, move on and come back to them if you have time left at the end.
  3. Wear a watch so that you don’t have to think about always looking up to find the clock.
  4. Read each question carefully! Pick out any key words and think what is it asking you?
  5. Double check your answers. Make sure it makes sense by reading the question and answer together.
  6. If you are unsure of a word try replacing it with a synonym to see what you think makes sense.
  7. If a question is tricky and taking too long, move on and get as many marks as you can on the easy questions first. Circle the question number so that it is easy to find later when you want to come back to it.
  8. Trust your instincts! Try not to overthink, and keep changing your answer. Your first one is normally correct, unless you misread the question.
  9. Watch out for your spelling and grammar.
  10. Don’t start rushing if you see other students leaving early.
  11. Make the most of every second. If you finish early, double check. Make sure you have answered every question and are happy with your answers.
  12. Don’t purposely leave questions blank. You can’t lose marks so if you are not sure use the process of elimination to help narrow down your options and then select what you think is the most logical answer.

Having a positive mindset!

  1. Before you start, take a few deep breaths and get in the zone!
  2. Tell yourself positive affirmations such as ‘I can do this!’, ‘I’m confident’. ‘I know what to do!’.
  3. Don’t compare yourself to others around you. Just focus on your own test and what you are doing.
  4. When you finish a section, take a small break. Give yourself a minute to take a deep breath, and clear your mind before the next section.
  5. Remember to take small sips of water, but not too much or you will need the toilet!
  6. If you get stuck, don’t panic. You can move on and come back to this question later.
